Following changes to its API access, users are forced to log in on the official Reddit app if they want to view NSFW content on mobile.
It is possible on Stealth which is an accountless option with options to use a teddit instance. Little reason to even have an account anymore on reddit, and for those who say subs. Stealth lets you have a feed too. And those that say saving comments or posts Stealth lets you do that too. All locally and exportable.
If you continue using reddit on the phone why let reddit keep harvesting account specific data while just lurking? Go use stealth instead over doing stuff like patching past third party apps and logging in and letting them track your activity then being drawn to add value to the platform through engagement by being tempted to upvotes, downvote, and post.
But wait, why isn’t that affected by the api changes
Doesn’t use reddit api. Uses either a scraper or teddit instance. There is no option to login. It’s a pure lurk mode reddit app.
How does teddit get the content?
From the sounds of it currently uses reddit api
https://github.com/libreddit/libreddit/issues/818
Once that gets killed off will have to rely on scraping. Which I just tested on Stealth , and yes nsfw content is available. And yes, even scrapes you a custom subscription feed with no account.
Seems awesome! Only a shame it doesn’t allow blocking communities, or much customability as far as the ui is concerned. Might have to do revanced boost honestly, reddit is such a big part of my hobby.
Yeah, it’s very barebones, but I have no intention of scrolling through /r/all any more or interacting with the community so it meets my needs. Days of commenting with the reddit community and giving account based click impressions are done.
Pretty much there set to automatically launch any reddit search result from stealth running the reddit instance so I avoid going directly to reddit. Sort like a smoking patch to tapering off reddit. Using past third party app with the account functionality feels too much like using it as normal, and even closer to falling into commenting again.
💀
It’s a Foss reddit app available from f-droid. https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.cosmos.unreddit/
Oh no! Anyways…
@L4s In mobile browser still works, but they already said that the mobile website will be killed.
Source? Not that I don’t believe it, but I’ve seen it thrown around quite a few times and I can’t find where did they say that.
@Syrc According to one of the admins they were experimenting with removing the login in mobile websites.
That means that they’re preparing for a possible future where they remove said feature.https://www.reddit.com/r/help/comments/135tly1/comment/jim40zg/
Well, that’s not really a clear statement but close enough. They’re really trying to piss off as many users as possible huh.
Kind of ironic that the content they can’t monetize through ads is the content they’re blocking from third parties

Let the porn flow on lemmy!
Hopefully this brings some more communities to Lemmy. Some of my niche weed related subreddits like divinetribe had to be nsfw and I’d love them to move over here.
And you just use desktop mode
Not just nsfw content, it’s bullshit when any site tries to force you to use an app because of a bit of text in your browser profile
Facebook did it for years and any site that does it I avoid
Obvious? Why are we talking about this still? Access was
terminatedpay walled almost a week ago.Sexually explicit content was still available through the paywalled API until yesterday.
It takes a while to get major changes like this to make it’s way to the live branch. If this didn’t hit at the same time as API costs, then that likely means there was a bug preventing the restriction on nsfw content
https://old.reddit.com/ still seems to work, and that one doesn’t force you to use the app or login.
The grim reaper is coming for old.reddit.com any day now.
It’s already been leaked they’re killing off everything outside of the official app in phases. Only a matter of time.
Leaked or rumored? The only thing I’ve seen officially is them saying old.reddit isn’t going anywhere.
Source?
Yeah that’s likely
A few weeks ago when I still used Reddit via old.Reddit I was constantly getting switched to the new Reddit. It was infuriating.
Is this just speculation or is there evidence for it?
In January Reddit told third party app developers that there wouldn’t be any API changes this year. Maybe in the future, but they definitely wouldn’t charge for it this year.
Similarly, Spez said that old Reddit isn’t going away.
To me, that’s enough to consider it a realistic possibility.
Speculation, but it’s an inevitability. It costs money to support old.reddit, which means Reddit will certainly kill it on the day that they’ll think the backlash will be small enough.
My imagination is that old.reddit.com was cheaper to serve than whatever it is they are doing now. Maybe they make less ad revenue?
To keep old reddit alive they need to also spend developer time supporting some new features and not breaking legacy code. It’s more than just server costs.
There was a Reddit post a while back where they confirmed the OP was part of an A/B test to disable logging in to old.reddit.com on mobile. Not a great sign.
https://www.reddit.com/r/help/comments/135tly1/helpdid_reddit_just_destroy_mobile_browser_access/
That makes sense though considering that they wanted to kill the 3rd party apps too. I’d imagine that for desktop users it shouldn’t matter much wether you’re using the redesign or old.reddit - they’ll be able to collect the same data and show the same ads.
I still have Infinity installed and I can still porn. Is it possible existing API keys have the permission to fetch NSFW posts. Though it won’t be long lived though.
Reddit moderators can see all nsfw content. So your account is likely a moderator or creator of a subreddit.
If you’re a mod on any sub you can still see nsfw content on any other sub?
This is an interesting loophole. I didn’t think I was either of those.
It still works using my own API key
are there apps that are letting users create their own API keys and plug them in?
Revanced Manager allows you to patch a few third party apps with your own API key if you’re on android
Yup. I used it to patch sync with its own api key and remove all ads. It’s been working flawlessly, including nsfw content after creating my own sub to mod.
I’m not fully switching to lemmy until sync comes over, then Reddit can finally fuck off entirely.
Official sauce: https://github.com/revanced/revanced-manager
There are community tweaks, especially for Apollo, that let you insert your API key.
Never come between a horny internet user and pr0n 🍆
I used Reddit partly because I didn’t want to pay for porn.
