A pig’s got to fly.

In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious Porco Rosso, a former World War I flying ace who was somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew’s American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo and his longtime friend Madame Gina.

Fantastic movie, one of the underrated Ghibli ones! Great animation and storytelling! Also, I love that while there’s some vague “oh it’s because he was disillusioned with stuff” in outside documents, they basically never say in the movie why he’s a pig. Everyone just kind of accepts it.

He said he has a curse, I think, but there’s not much made of it.

He was a human before, he became a pig after a battle where he was the only survivor IIRC

Dito, Princess Mononkoe will always be the film that prompted me to take anime seriously as a form of media. Porco Rosso will always be my favorite.

For me it was Spirited Away actually. I held off on Porco Rosso for so long because the story sounded so silly. Big mistake!

Excellent movie. I especially love the scene where Porco and his opponent are fighting in the shallows, and the air pirates are competing for the lady’s affection.

My favorite part of this movie is when the Texan tries to marry a minor against her will. And they say Ghibli makes fantasy

Slept on this one till very recently and really regret it, honestly such a good movie and doesn’t even really explain important plot points like “why is he a pig??” Besides a passing mention of something happened. Love the type of storytelling that leaves a lot to the imagination

Honestly a bit disapointed in it. It’s somehow not a typical Ghibli. Even Erdsee was more “in line” imo.

Maybe it was just it being a children tale but having references to grown up things it doesn’t follow through, the wild mix of two mindsets, that bothered me.
