This sent me down a rabbit hole.

Napster is still around AND they pay artists more than anyone else!

I wish there was an ethical independent streaming service. I buy albums still but it’s hard to discover new stuff without it.

      no ethical consumption under capitalism.

we would need a foss decentralized platform not unlike lemmy.

Didn’t tidal like about their super high quality tier not actually being as good as they said it was?

Great except for audio quality. I don’t understand why they stubbornly refuse to improve it. I’d be willing to pay more for a higher audio quality tier.

I check to see if they’ve improved every now and again because I think their stations made from a song or artist (my preferred way to listen) are without peer, but until they get their shit together I’m sticking with Tidal.

Tidal also lets you do a lot of things Pandora doesn’t: scrub thorough any track, play more specific songs instead of waiting for them to come up, see the whole queue it generated and play anything on it, and a few other things but I would happily give it all up for Pandora’s superior station generation if they would only get higher quality audio.

I love music, but i have been slowly slowing down over the past few years… all I can say is get several good music sites that do reviews and follow them. I also have music sites that have current top 10 lists for the week, month, and year, which helps me keep up.

I have never used Spotify outside a 6 month free trial and found I didn’t like it as much as my own setup because I didn’t really like the recommendations, which is what I was hoping for the most. Something about hunting down your own style of music just feels like something that can’t be replaced.

Feels like a good spot to recommend Bandcamp Fridays. On the first Fridays of some months, the site gives all proceeds to the artists for any purchases made that day. And tomorrow’stoday’s their next one.

Have you tried The Wire? I find tons of great artists of all sorts of styles and genres on their site. It’s a bit more involved than hitting play in an app and hearing whatever comes up, but they’ve been doing good work for a long time now. They put ears on DOOM’s work before he blew up, for example.

I have not heard of it. I’ll look at it, thanks. I’m picky about my service because there’s certain classical music only on certain platforms that I want that I actually can’t buy.

I’m using Spotify on a free account with ad blocking. Soothes my guilt at least a little bit that they don’t make money off me.

Well but the artists won’t get any money from you either then. Not that they would get much from Spotify anyways. They’re among the worst in artist payouts.

I need to look into switching, but unfortunately Spotify has my music tastes dialed in pretty well.
