One is attached to the International Space Station, and the other is collecting data as a stand-alone satellite. The latter would meet its permanent demise after burning up in the atmosphere if the mission were to be terminated.

A 2023 review by NASA concluded that the data they’d been providing had been “of exceptionally high quality.”

The observatories provide detailed carbon dioxide measurements across various locations, allowing scientists to get a detailed glimpse of how human activity is affecting greenhouse gas emissions.

(Ex NASA employee) David Crisp said it “makes no economic sense to terminate NASA missions that are returning incredibly valuable data,” pointing out it costs only $15 million per year to maintain both observatories, a tiny fraction of the agency’s $25.4 billion budget.

Just give them a dummy button and play the clip of the death star blowing up or something. They aren’t going to check to make sure it happened. Keep it sending the data just turn off the server side recording it then turn it back on when they inevitably forget about it in a couple weeks.

This is 100% the answer. They will forget they ever wanted to do this because they will be managing another crisis of their own making in a week or two.

Yes, but it makes perfect sabotage sense from a saboteur’s perspective.

Democracies, that haven’t fallen, across the world will still collect this data, or build up to the point of being able to. Which means, the US plans to suppress those countries’ news and data too. Or, in other words, lock down the internet for their population like China does.

That’s not to say China and Russia won’t continue their cyber and political warfare against everyone on the outside. The US is currently openly fighting to undermine trans rights globally, while fighting gay rights behind closed doors (funding anti-gay rights groups in Africa).

It makes no economic sense if you value science and the contribution it makes to our economy, our society, our future.

But science has no political loyalty

Drop some other satellite and say it was this one. Trump won’t be around forever.

The irony is that the MAGA slogan “America First” actually puts America behind other nations consistently. The irony behind the MAGA belief that Trump puts American workers first is that all his policies prioritize the interests of the very people they hate and want him to dismantle: the uber-rich “Elite.” MAGA voters are some of the dumbest, most gullible Americans in the country, and I personally think they simply vote for the politicians they do because said politicians fly the same bigotry flags they support: anti-gay, anti-trans, anti-racial-equality, etc. In other words, MAGA is basically just America’s bigots rallying under an “America First” banner, which is code for”straight, white Americans first.” So sad I know people who support this crap and don’t realize they’re falling in with the worst America has to offer.

These people are seriously the dumbest. The other day I was told that “finally Trump is fixing this shit” and that “tariffs are the price for doing business” and that I “have to pay them and can no longer freeload by spending money on healthcare”. Didn’t get an answer when I asked if he even knows how tariffs work and why it could possibly be that USA spends more money on healthcare per capita than any other nation in the world

Trumps on the list. Anything he does and says is just a distraction from not releasing the list.

Is this enough evidence to say that MAGA is running purely on accelerationism at this point?

I’m starting to think that maybe, just maybe, the rest of the world could unite and just remove USA from the map. Humanity might survive if it’d happen, but in the end, we all know we’re going to burn together.

They’ll be cutting off funding for the program as well. So why not… move it to Canada or Germany?

He’s already had a fit with Canada. If his response continues to be to raise tariffs until all the affected sectors of the US economy just move to Canada to avoid them….

With any luck some of their military production facilities will move here to avoid the tariffs, and then when things kick off we can nationalize the bastards
