It’s a free update
Announcement: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3286930/view/530980289128694204
ABOUT TIME! This was the one I was waiting for! I LOVED Hexen back in the day, I tried to play it on SteamDeck a few times, it never works out quite right. This is very welcome news!
Yes, same, been waiting for this one.
I played through Heretic on Steam (not on the Deck) a few years ago, but I definitely didn’t use the Dosbox version, but some sourceport (probably Chocolate or Crispy Doom). Guess I have to re-play it.
Heretic plays great via GZDoom as well.
Yes it does very much, but it took a lot of work to get up and running and I recently reset my SteamDeck and I didn’t want to go through the hassle again. It’s also nice to have cloud saves and just general steam features.
I played Heretic yesterday for a bit. Sadly no perspective correction for mouse look (their ROTT had it neither) which makes me seasick. GZDoom is much better in that regard.
So can we get Heretic 2 on Steam? Cause part of the reason we couldn’t was because of Rights Issues between Activision and ID Software, but those are literally the same guy now (Microsoft)

Hearing that Raven secured a contract with Microsoft the other day had me wondering if perhaps they would try and revive these the way they did with Doom. This is a good indication that yes, they more than likely will end up making a new Heretic and/or Hexen 😃
I don’t know what you mean. Raven is a Microsoft subsidiary. What sort of contracts would they need to secure with Microsoft?
It was a union contract.
It was a union contract.
Raven in in the Call of Duty gulag.
I got an email from Bandcamp about the soundtrack from Andrew Hulshult and had to check if these games finally got a remaster/re-release/sourceport.
Pumped for this, and I don’t have to pay anything extra for the update, since I owned the old games on Steam already.
I meet the specs easily, but they seem pretty high for 30 year old games…
With stuff like this, it’s always possible that’s just the slowest hardware the devs have on hand to test with. The Doom and Quake re-releases are the same, I think all of these use the Kex Engine.
I bought Hexen at one of those knife and gun shows that you have to pay to get into. 10 yr old me was way into it.
So apparently I got it for free. I went to buy it (because duh) and its already in my library. Yay me!
This is great news! I love these 2 games, especially Hexen! Be a lot easier to play them on steamdeck now!
Looks like mods are just starting to go up. Hopefully Jimmy (or a fan I guess) uploads his Faithless trilogy for Heretic. It mixes some elements from Hexen in and is one of the better fantasy boomer shooters I’ve played. Highly recommended when it’s available.
I went to buy it and found out that I already own it. Very nice.
