I live in Salt Lake City. To summarize why this happened: these buildings have been condemned and needing to be demolished for years. The city intends to turn 1/4th+ of our very large block into a pedestrian plaza and has expressed a desire to include the memorials there. This property sits along our best bidirectional bike path and an expansion of another bike path that will carry bikes into downtown. This is not the end, and continued public comments will ensure that these memorials do not die with the building they were originally painted on.
