Which meant

• you spent more time talking to people
• you just spent more time with people
• you read more to ease the boredom
• you used a library more
• you read actual newspapers written by journalists more
• you questioned the government more
• you had to pay to use an inconvenient landline all the time which meant you called less and wanted to just see people more
