this is unironically my plan for tomorrow night.

Im allergic to shellfish and I discovered imitation crab from a meme (fittingly on Lemmy) which is only like 5% actual crab.

However, my allergy started as a kid and just got worse and worse till I eventually couldn’t eat it at all anymore, it’s been like 5 years.

Since we don’t know if the allergy got to deadly levels in that time, I have to be around an epi-pen when I eat it.
My brother in law has one, so I’m going to his house after work.

    I’ll keep you updated 🫡

edit, update 1: finished work for the day. headed to brother in laws house in about an hour! super excited.

    edit 2: im so upset.

they were frozen last night so I actually left them to thaw overnight. I mentioned to my sister about how people said to microdoce it, so I only warmed up 1 in the microwave with some butter just in case I had a bad reaction.
When I ate it the texture was super chewy and slimy almost, not very fun. The flavor was hardly the real thing, and the worst part: IT GAVE ME A HEADACHE.
I am so distrought. My hopes were so high. it let me down:((

I might try microdoceing a quarter before bed or something for a couple weeks. Since it is only a headache I feel like I can work myself up to bigger parts - if I can sleep through the headaches that is.

at the end of the day It was a nice try and I’m glad I tried it :/

Maybe… don’t take the risk? If you wanna know how allergic you are, there are tests for that.

Don’t play with fire, friend. Fake crab isn’t worth dying for.

Allergists can work magic now with micro dosing. My kid’s peanut allergy is just gone.

If you have the means and the desire, it’s called LDA (low dose allergen) therapy. It’s sometimes also called SLIT (sub-lingual immuno therapy). There’s probably differences. I’m not a doctor.

would SLUT therapy work too? 🥺

Fr though, I never liked most seafood, only the crab. If I can get most of the crab back I’ll be happy, I don’t see a need to pay for therapy for food I don’t really enjoy 90% of.

I’m allergic to cucumbers and even if I just touch the flesh of a cucumber to my lips, my lips well up. I’m not sure how much less dosage I could give myself.

Also it’s cucumber so who the hell cares anyway.

I’m probably wrong, but maybe microdosing could help you not die from 5% crab. But you gotta do it with a doctor, and it can be expensive. On the upside, you could get so sick of eating crab that you won’t need to worry about your allergy again.

Immunotherapy for allergies uses literally microscopic doses of allergens to avoid triggering a reaction. It’s not really possible to consume an amount small enough to get the same effect.
