I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the people on the list on the democrat side voted in favor of releasing them knowing that the republicans would vote it down anyways.

They just wanted the good optics.

Oh, cool satyrical comment about what a Republican would say.

And then a Democrat would say “by that logic, couldn’t a mix of Republicans vote yes and Democrats vote no? Instead it’s a clear partisan split like this problem only really effects one side, and everyone voting yes who would be impacted would then risk not only their career but the rest of their lives in the off chance it did pass.”

Do you really think that none of the democrats who voted on this are on the list?

We already know bill Clinton is on the list democrats are not immune from this. Power corrupts and that applies to democrats and republicans.

The republicans never go against what trump wants no matter what so of course they would all vote against this. They have been doing this for every heinous policy that trump wants why would they stop here?

This is an issue of people using their positions of power to do evil shit and the republicans probably do have more people on the list but to pretend that democrats aren’t guilty as well is naive.

Power does not corrupt. Throughout history there have been individuals who used their power to do extraordinary good.

What power does do, specifically power that is hierarchical in structure, is attract those who are already corrupt. Those individuals crave power above all else and will do anything to secure that power for themselves whereas someone who would use that power for good would not resort to underhanded tactics in order to manipulate a win and is thus less likely to succeed in obtaining that position. This is especially true in our electoralist system where the method in which people obtain seats of power is nothing more than a popularity contest.

You can’t reasonably hold a popularity competition for representation when you live in a society where misinformation is encouraged.

Power and money corrupt most people. The government should be designed from the ground up to resist corruption. It should eliminate manipulation and ensure societies policies are sustainable and that future generations will thrive.

I mean, you can’t reasonably hold a popularity contest for representation, period. This electoralists system is intrinsically flawed in that it only will ever appeal to the lowest common denominator and, as you stated, is readily manipulated by those who benefit from the intentional spread misinformation in order to exploit that aspect of the system.

As you said, our government needs to be restructured to resist corruption. You accomplish that by doing away with hierarchy in favor of horizontal structures where the power of authority comes from the bottom up, not from the top down. This is why I am a proponent of Anarchist political theory. Everyone should read Kropotkin’s Conquest of Bread at least once.

Again, I really must emphasize this point, power does not corrupt. Corrupt people seek power. There is a difference.

Money is simply a tool that gives people power. Give a million to a good person and it would be gone within a week as they would spend it to better themselves and those around them. Give a million to a corrupt person and they will use it to acquire more, because the corrupt crave the power that money gives them.
