Elon Musk, who recently stepped down as the head of DOGE, has been flooding his X feed with criticism of President Trump over his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
“Kayfabe” is carnie speak for “scripted”. And, like all writing, it is a reflection of the writers.
WWE has a long history of kayfabe bits that clearly reflect the views of those in power. Just look at all the times the rapist and sex trafficker forced female talent to kiss his ass in the ring or otherwise degrade themselves. Same with all the horrifically racist arcs (Triple H, the current savior of all of pro wrestling, had a ridiculously racist series of matches and promos against a black guy… that he won).
NJPW and CMLL have their own cultural weirdnesses that I can’t fully comment on. But AEW… look, yes, it is owned by a billionare (and his father) in Florida and you gotta acknowledge that carnies gonna carnie. But it is well worth remembering that when a talent (Ricochet) started his historically incel bullshit and wanted to do an andrew tate character he was allegedly told to shut the fuck up and that character didn’t last the week. And then you have people like Adam Page/Stephen Woltz, Brody King/Nathan Blauvelt, and Thunder Rosa/Melissa Cervantes who are all pretty openly left wing (arguably leftist) who were allowed to make political statements on live television and PPVs speaking to the plight of immigrants in trump’s america.
Let alone the two biggest storylines in AEW being a millennial cowboy with imposter syndrome and alcoholic tendencies working through his problems with borderline live therapy versus toxic masculinity and a bi as fuck lunatic who had an entire year long storyline of fighting her ex in the most lesbian storyline ever put on mainstream TV.
Wrestline is a minefield. But pretending wrestling would entertain this shit is just normalizing WWE which people obviously need to watch because “Roman Reigns is the greatest story ever told and Cody Rhodes solved racism”.
I thought they were referring to kayfabe? But I know nothing about wrestling.
