My 10 year old custom built computer is crashing a lot. I would like to use parts of it so I’m not blowing tons replacing everything.

The link for pc part picker has my current case, power supply, and CPU cooler which should all still be good to reuse. The other parts in that build are just ones I picked at random so are totally up for change.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would prefer to keep it under 1000 CAD. If you want to see my actual current build I will put it in a comment.

Edit: I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon as of now. The PSU was replaced in 2021

I’ll look into the themal paste as well since that is an easy thing to replace.

Just wanted to mention, because it’s often overlooked, check the thermal paste on your GPU as well. My wife’s system was crashing constantly in games and it was driving us crazy trying to figure out why. Then, I pulled the GPU cooler and found the thermal paste was more “powder” than “paste”. Cleaned the old paste off, applied new paste, and the system ran like a dream for another year or so before she upgraded the GPU.

So I got a tube of thermal paste and redid the GPU and CPU. It was pretty crusty on both, so far after about 30 mins running 8 different tabs of YouTube concurrently the fans barely turned on versus that crashing the computer after 5 mins.

I’ll run some proper tests over the weekend. Do a bunch of benchmark tests on beyond all reason to see how them temp goes.
