Just curious to know how many mods here are

  • A. still “here” and active
  • B. here but given up due to lack of momentum, interest
  • C. abandoned platform completely
  • D. just waiting for the 1 year mark and praying new users and posters will continue to come
  • E. other? (like only relying at alternative matrix chat)

I’ll be happy to see more than 10 responses from this dead community 😉

[Update 11/18]: glad to see comments, feedback, much more than I expected. Also see the modlog for actions taken. Just wanted to point out a couple of threads:

Same, the niche communities I follow really only merit checking in weekly. Can’t wait until it really takes off and rivals the content on reddit, because I’m not going back

Perhaps you may want to volunteer to mod/take over some communities that have been abandoned? Or even help.out at existing active ones…

I would venture that if you show a passion for a specific topic/focus/niche/kink, many other mods and communities would welcome you.

I think something needs to be done about downvotes. Any hardcore content I post is immediately downvoted. Pretty much all hard content I post gets 5 downvotes. Some recover, some don’t.

I think people browse local and most don’t seem to like hard content. People here seem to prefer softcore. That’s fine, but downvoting is not the response to that.

I think you may have to remove downvotes and people will have to make their own subscription list and browse that. (What I do is browse local and then block the communities that I’m not interested in.)

(I’ll copy this to the other thread, but this one seems more active and I want it to be seen.)

We now have a discussion about this going on in the modcoordination matrix room, with the admins engaging…

I’m sure bridgade-voting manipulation by related accounts/groups (up or down votes) happen here as on Reddit, but the effect is much more magnified here…

Brigade implies an organized (one way or another) effort, which I don’t think it is. This is the result of people browsing ‘local’ and downvoting what they don’t like, when it’s entirely suitable for the community it’s on.

Not a mod, but a new user from Reddit. I’m the husband of an MF bbw couple. We’ve enjoyed posting ourselves on reddit over the years.

I was happy to see there was an NSFW Lemmy instance. I’m also happy to see that it’s well moderated.

There doesn’t yet seem to be a critical mass of people here. We’re not conventionally attractive people, but on reddit there were numerous places we could feel welcomed and hot.

    That’s not the case here.

There’s a bbw community here I’ve started posting in. I tried a few other places, but ended up getting more downvotes than upvotes. That doesn’t feel good when we’re just here to show off.

I’m planning on sticking around for a while, hopefully some more plus-size lovers come around here soon 😘

We’re out there, waiting for content. Actually the lack of content in those areas has spawned a conversation between my partner and myself to start making our own to post here. Like you all, we are unconventionally attractive, and quite comfortable with our own skin/wants/desires. Just trying to navigate the groundwork between us to post online comfortably.

Please hang in there. Feel free to start up a new community if one doesn’t exist, or volunteer to help mod at existing ones that interests you. You can help change the tenor and culture of body shaming that goes on by trolls brigade-voting.

Modding and growing communities sometimes is “hard” work, but very rewarding once you meet friends and like-minded folks.

Unfortunately, gender, body and kink shaming remains very prevalent…

I can see that. It seems like getting rid of downvotes would be worth trying to help combat this.

For C - here’re a few names that I think have bailed for good (based on lack of any activites since they first joined, will add more later):

My only purpose for this list is simply for me to keep myself aware of potentially abandoned communities, not to pick on or shame anyone. I don’t mean to offend anyone.

The amount of kink shaming in this thread is disappointing.

One of my kinks is young, beautiful, ladies. None of these ladies would ever want to have anything to do with me. The are a fantasy. At the same time I have no interest in anyone underaged. I go to great extents to make sure what I post is legal. There are a number of studios from Brazil, Columbia, Japan, Vietnam, and China that I would love to post from, but they don’t legally or structurally provide 18 USC 2257 confirmation.

When it comes to OC content, the most important aspect of any model to me is her face/eyes. It is what I look at first in any photo. This by itself eliminates a large portion of OC content for me. Further as a professional photographer, the light, composition, and concept of the photo are important. These aspects are often missing or poorly understood in OC content. Thats ok. For those that like OC content, I am glad it is here for you.

As to the original question, A for now.

    On to the problems.

I tend to post large images. I stay under what are the poorly documented limits. Often in posting an image it will fail with an error message that makes no sense. (SyntaxError: Unexpected token ‘R’, “Request er”… is not valid JSON) Many times, simply reposting the same image works. On other images, which have a smaller height and width (in pixels), and take up less storage (in MB) than what I have found as practical maximums, they just will not post. (Yes, I have posted this as an issue on the lemmy-ui GitHub.)

Lemmy in general, and LemmyNSFW in specific are much harder than reddit or other historical platforms to explore, and find the material you enjoy. Part of this is most posters are only posting in one or a very few communities. On reddit, I would find someone who was posting stuff I liked, I would click on their profile and use that to find other subreddits I would like. Additionally many subreddits, would have a list of “our friends” in the side bar, which is very rare here.

Staying on exploration, the search tools in the default web UI (simply navigating to https://lemmynsfw.com/ in a browser) are lacking. The only way to improve this is to make suggestions / get invoked with the development of the code. There are also, that I am aware of no communities like r/NSFW411/ or r/wowthissubexists/ (specifically the Fap Friday Thread) to help with finding new stuff.

As to the front page, whether you sort by active or hot what you tend to see is stuff that was recently posted. As there are a few posters, bots or not, that tend to post 15+ posts at a given time, those are what dominate the front page. If it is stuff you like, great, if not… Since this is generated automatically by Lemmy, you either need to come up with and code a new algorithm, throttle posting, or get more active posters.

As a final note, to the admins of LemmyNSFW and all the mods and posters who contribute. Thank You very much.

The ownership of [email protected] was given to me by the original owner because of my attempt at making an r/NSFW411 equivalent for lemmy.

I was hoping there would be more people giving feedback or recommending new communities to add to it. (But so far there was only one person requesting to remove a community from a category.)

Edit: I also agree with the first part of your post. If everyone involved is 18+ and it’s consensual, what’s the problem?

Regarding posting of large images: AFAIK, nothing has changed since this update https://lemmynsfw.com/comment/626043 - max size remains 4096x4096 and supposedly 20MB.

It is true that very large images (filesize wise) may run into issues with timeouts when uploading… For myself - I try to compress my images for direct uploads to LemmyNSFW down to a manageable 2-4 MB range… Anything above that, I use lensdumps.com or imgchest.com hosting, simply to save my own bandwidth/usage also when I post to multiple places.

I’m trying to keep it going but at times I’m the only one posting, or we get a flurry of Reddit reposts and then nothing again. Just feels a bit futile.

With shot down, I mean I did try posting to other communities but there was either no interest, or people got a bit territorial. Had one fracas where someone followed me round reporting everything I posted so in the end I gave up.

You are doing good with new attempts.

Just Fyi that you might find useful too - see https://lemmynsfw.com/post/4557625.

Crosspostings can be a hit or miss, just try to be very aware about the destination community’s unique rules. Afaik, most general communities will welcome relevant content if you are not over posting into it.

Just an addition/caution to also be aware about LemmyNSFW instance-wide rule 2, when posting unidentified or unattributed models and content. Just please make sure to stay away from potential revenge porn or stuff where age verification can’t be provided - just don’t want you to get into hot water…

(Rule Two) Respect and Consent: Treat all members with respect and obtain consent when sharing explicit content involving others. No doxxing.

Cheers. I did have a go at crossposting, but wasn’t sure how successful it was. Besides, posting a new and different picture to each community brings fresh content and hopefully avoids spamming everyone’s feed.

I hear you regarding Rule 2. It’s the difficulty with posting non-OC, I have absolutely no idea what has been shared and why (and even the seemingly professional material, between copyright or a GDP type situation I can’t just assume permission). So I try and use my judgement, only post pics that are already freely available on the web, nothing overtly revenge like and we blocked the “upvote and I’ll leak the rest” type posts. Same with age, best judgement is the best I can do.

But I don’t follow your sub because I only like OC and I don’t have preferences for particular nationalities/ethnicities (or even genders for that matter). I like everyone. So I wouldn’t follow “IndianGirls”. It’s too specific for me. Kudos for running it though for those who are into it! Just trying to say why I didn’t subscribe (I’m just new but anyway).

That’s cool, we want people to follow what they like. I try and keep it fairly broad, see what catches people’s interest. Though the lack of other contributors means the community mainly reflects mine (or my mates) tastes. We do have one OC poster but she gets massively downvoted for some reason.

Kinda A, and also a little D. It’s disheartening to see new comms continuing to appear that cater to evermore niche interests, instead of people having the restraint and good sense to cooperate towards reaching critical mass on much broader subject comms first. Also, I’m still not exactly loving the UX on desktop (my primary interface) even with LemmyTools, but recently found the Connect for Lemmy app in the Play Store and that’s helped keep me checking in regularly in spare moments during the day from my phone.

Connect is good, but I’ve switched to using Boost for Lemmy (I had been a boost app user on Reddit so I like the familiar look and feel), for posting and browsing.

[Update: I’m not promoting, just a long time happy paid user of the Boost app: see improvements https://lemmynsfw.com/post/4259177]

I use the default browser UX mainly for modding. BTW, this default browser UI is the only experience afaik currently that allows tracking of crosspostings (example , so that I don’t end up duplicating what’s already posted

Also the autofill/complete when typing in community names starting with the ! is a big plus.

Very true about Rome not built in a day. I don’t have any grandiose expectations, and I post here what I like, and if others enjoy the same, good. I spent over 5 years helping Reddit slowly grow along with the various subreddits I started from scratch and growth there was also slow and steady until the pandemic growth spurt came - so 6 months here is a good start. I spend only a quarter of my time now on Reddit just keeping various subs alive, and to raise awareness about LemmyNSFW to redditors.

Some interests are niche enough to be a turn off to a general audience though. When a new user shows up for the very first time and only sees two dozen hentai feet pics or whoever the fuck Matty Perez is as their entire feed it can be confusing. When they need to actively seek out content with general appeal it will make it seem like this is essentially only a fetish community. At a certain point it does become a detracting factor towards attracting new users.

I agree that these things take time and that there will be more waves of new users once porn bans are in place on larger platforms, but unless there is a stable amount of content with general appeal as a ‘hook’ to keep people coming back it will be difficult to see any real growth.

In my opinion this entire instance seems to be having an identity crisis. It’s trying to emulate too many different platforms at once without having the user base to successfully do this.

You’re right that the default sorting being local-active definitely doesn’t help. The new user experience for Lemmy in general has issues at its core unfortunately. Setting communities as default is an easy solution, but would have its own set of issues.

I don’t think it’s a bad solution to have defaults, but it would require pretty clear and heavy moderation, likely from admins themselves. This would also have the secondary effect of forcing admins to take a stance on what kind of content should primarily be on the instance. All of this also ignores how feasible something like that would be across all the varying apps and front ends, which I have no idea.

I’m a bit sad about the amount of posting, but reddit is full of OnlyFans promotion, commercial crap. And they will get rid of NSFW subs sooner or later. They have to because their prudish investors will demand it when they go to the stock market.

I think LemmyNSFW is poised to take up the slack. I’m sad that most Lemmy instances block this LemmyNSFW though. The idea was to be like Reddit.
