I think that happened a long time ago
The simple fact that there is an unnecessary amount of control given to a single person over the information and communication you share and consume automatically makes the environment this person controls an unsafe environment for free speech. Yes, there should be moderation, but it should by moderation by the community, not the person on the top of the unnecessary hierarchy. Centralized social media only serves its owners, it exists for no other reason.

Back before they went “independent,” kind of. When Sears sent legal threats to take down a post exploiting an xss bug to make a joke about grilling babies, reddit had a big public discussion on it, and ultimately left the post up

Was that even a sub critical of Elon? I haven’t been on Reddit since the API migration, but I remember that sub just being a joke response to BlackPeopleTwitter, which mostly just reposted funny tweets.
It’s effectively “Liberal people twitter” with all posts being about politics, especially discussing Musk and Trump. I think it changed around the Covid lockdowns.
Several individuals on that sub were making death threats towards individuals in government. The mods either supported or ignored them, so a temp ban needed to be put in place.
