What’s interesting about this case is that she’s an illegal who was deported years ago but snuck back in anyway. Did she forget about her illegal status? Or did she think she would be spared by supporting Trump?

The cynical answer is she thought the would be spared because she’s white.

The straight answer is that Trump told people the country was being overrun by criminals and gang members whom he would deport. People who bought that story thought those who didn’t fit that description would be safe.

Well, the thing about being a criminal is that it means you’ve been convicted of a crime.

Trump is a criminal. But he was born in the US to US citizens.

The goal is to make all sorts of things crimes such that it’s almost impossible to function in the US as a foreigner without committing a crime. At that point, the government can choose the people to deport at their whim.

Since birthright citizenship is being struck down, and this government interprets the constitution as only applicable to citizens, expect Trump to attempt again to pass legislation for more types of citizenship nullification.

One tricky bit is, if you’re declared legally dead, you immediately become an illegal resident if you’re still alive. And DOGE has already declared a number of people dead by misinterpreting a few databases.

I can almost imagine this being written by Douglas adams, but the consequences a little too depressing. You know, in contrast to the complete destruction of the earth

Birthright citizenship was not struck down. Universal injunctions were struck down, which means the Constitution will be applied in any cases where a state has a law on the books or a class action suit has been brought and a statewide injunction has been declared. These suits will wind their way through the courts and may possibly be heard by the Supreme Court.

I’d like to predict the USSC would decline to hear the case because there would be no discrepancies in prior rulings and the legal question would be so obvious, but I’ve given up trying to predict this court. In any event, I do think it’s unlikely they would rule against birthright citizenship, since it would be plainly unconstitutional and there’s no real wiggle room to reinterpret it differently.

What would happen to them if they say birthright citizenship is not a thing,? If it only applied to former slaves? Or just offer no explanation whatsoever?

They could write an opinion that says “because Trump said so.” And I don’t think they would face impeachment, even a little bit.

Spared for sure. Like many legal citizens will think when the BBB hits, they will 100% blame dems but it’ll be Trump polices that will bite them. They are just too ignorant to realize.

I’m unsure about that? Or at least if the likes of Stephen Miller would consider her “white”? She’s married to someone with the last name of “Olivera”. I’m not sure what her maiden name is, but even the “crime” of marrying outside the white race might be enough at some future stage of this…

Trump wants mass deportations and he is getting mass deportations. I don’t think he cares if they pick up a few white people to pad the numbers a bit.

The question is, “Will he continue voting for the party that did this, despite ‘not supporting Trump’

Because the moderate Republicans are leaving the government, and it’s the MAGA Republicans that remain. For example, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis voted against the BBB, but then made the announcement that he would not be running for re-election. And why? The Super PACs would have punished him.

They keep saying “criminals,” even in this story. Some of them are US citizens, one of them was 4. I’m pretty sure a 4 year old isn’t a criminal. Also, with no due process, we don’t know shit if they’re criminals or not. This is a money grabbing grift that is disappearing people, probably to death.

I’d go even farther. Since there’s been precious little due process, essentially none are criminal. Essentially none of those deported have been convicted of any crime.

And no, I’m not taking the word of the people who deprived them of that right while hiding their own faces

Yeah want to shake these people. They could deport YOU! your wife! Your CHILD! To a torture prison in the jungle! You don’t know if any of these people are criminals! You don’t know if they are citizens! You don’t know! They haven’t seen a judge! How would anyone know?

THEY CAN PUT YOU IN A VAN TOMORROW AND SHAVE YOUR HEAD IN CECOT THE DAY AFTER THAT!

They could send you to Syria. South Sudan, some other black site. No one would stop them.

This is the kind of scenario I see in my head when one of these asshats say they wanted to “shake things up in Washington”. 🙄

It’s hard to build a system, even if it’s not working 100% perfectly (and no human institution is ever likely to do so). Very hard. It’s quite simple to break shit. Any toddler can kick over a sand castle.

But hey, at least we did something about the “status quo”, because having a status quo is automatically a bad thing according to a whole lot of fools and dumbasses.

Also, to really complete the DARVO effect, it could use a few third parties popping up to represent the Elevated Centrists, the “independents”, the “liberal media”, and a certain kind of “leftist” that like to blame the Democrats for not stopping the Republicans doing all the awful shit they get up to…

I hate this graphic. Read top to bottom, “have the day you Voted for” which is obviously incorrect as you would only capitalize the first word of the statement, so it’s bottom to top/left to right, thus “Voted for day you have the” which is also clearly not correct. Even if you ignore the capitalization error, the statement is just shit. I get what it’s trying to convey, but it sucks ass at doing so. It’s a roundabout way of saying “you reap what you sow” but the creator got all “Live, Laugh, Love” (or I guess “live, laugh, Love”) about it and thought they were creative and smart.

I bitched about this like 6 months ago the last time I saw it, and I’ll bitch every time I see it. It’s awful on all levels. Mirror the rainbow, flip the text so it reads left to right + top to bottom, and they really need a sharper phrase in general.

Dude, it’s just a graphic I got from somewhere else, and I throw it on posts where it seems to apply.

I get what bothers you, but I think you’re caring wayyyy too much about a little comment graphic to type all that out! I’ve posted it a bunch of times, and everyone seems to understand the meaning just fine in spite of the odd capitalization.

Maybe, but it’s a slippery slope where logical and quality arguments - even if it’s a simple image - lose their impact. The quality of an argument becomes diminished, and by letting that happen, you open yourself and your argument to criticism.

This isn’t a ‘you’ thing, I get that, but it is a fine, real-world example of it happening. If the creator of the image can’t be bothered to step back and see the obvious flaws, it has lost its merit before it’s even started, only being carrier by the people who are okay with spreading it without seeing the problems it has.

Would you put any trust into a professional of any field who cannot create an argument, be it text or image, that has such glaring issues? And you know the audience that this is trying to poke fun at will rip it to bits worse than I have. It has no impact, other than in echo chambers, where people overlook the obvious.

          shrug
