I have a confession. When these people say something is “woke,” it makes me want to check it out as it might be a piece of art that has things I care about, like inclusion and fairness. I keep a list of “woke” games bookmarked so I can learn about new games that normally wouldn’t be on my radar to checkout. They think everything is “woke.” It hasn’t been updated since March, but it still has a lot of content on it.
My favorite review was the one for Gloomhaven, a fantasy game.
Out-of-place diversity in a ‘medieval’ setting. The Scoundrel class is a WOC. Multiple other units are POC with no explanation as to how such diversity exists.
…From my understanding “Game has monsters no need explain. PoC? HOLY SHIT HOW DID THAT HAPPEN!? IMMERSIVE TOTALLY RUINED”
Or Dredge, the fishing game that takes place in a world that is totally fictional and literal sea monsters.
Contains overtly pro-DEI messaging. Out of place diversity in what appears to be a 20th century setting.
Fictional word? Sure, I could see it. Lovecraftian horrors? Sure. that could happen in the 20th century. Diversity? That couldn’t happen!
Or Hunt: Showdown, the game with literal fucking zombies and monsters in a fictional Louisiana.
Contains overtly pro-DEI, overly pro-LGBTQ, and subtly pro-immigration messaging. Out of place diversity in a late 19th century setting. Improbable female, Black, and immigrant bounty hunters.
Granted, it has been a long time since I play Hunt. From what I remember there really wasn’t an overall story to the game. There is no plot outside of “go hunt this creature”. Reminder, this all takes place in a world with fucking zombies.
Or my favourite, the Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe, I shit you not:
Contains overtly pro-LGBTQ messaging. This version refers to the player as ‘they’ rather than
‘he or she’ like the original did
That’s right, switching a pronoun that grammatically is correct is now considered woke.
Honorable mentions:
Call of the Wild: the Angler
Injustice 2
Hellblade
Deathloop
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Surviving Mars
Space Marine 2
Broforce
Atomic Heart
Age of Wonders
Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
Darkest Dungeon
Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew
the Overcooked series
Absinthia
Crusader Kings 3
Hades 2
Encased
Cloudpunk
Vampyr
Prey
Doki Doki Literature Club
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age 2
Just Cause 2
Knights of the Old Republic
Disco Elysium
Valkyria
Bully
Jade Empire
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Fable
Guild Wars 2
Rimworld
the Sims 3
Chrono Trigger
Rage 2
The Divinity Original Sin series
Tyranny
Night in the Woods
All these games either have LGBT characters, women in combat roles, or people of color.
Just Cause 2 isn’t woke, it’s explicitly political. That’s like saying GTA 4 went woke when they added Gay Tony, while missing the biting satire of a society that fails to support vulnerable immigrants in building a stable life.
That movie didn’t have anyone playing it straight consistently; Egon was always the straight man. He was the base that allowed Peter and Ray to joke and it not be overwhelming.
Ghostbusters 2016 had times when each character played it straight but, at the core, they all were stuttering joke machines with no one to really ground the jokes.
It’s a real shame too because the chance to do it was there. Kristen Wiig’s character would have been the obvious choice but Melissa McCarthy, who’s overacting I can’t stand, would have been great to see be the level-headed one. The decision to make every character quippy really buries the great deliveries of Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth.

People really don’t understand gta satire
I’ve ended up doing the same for most media lately. Be it movies, games or shows.
“Captain America Brave New World is WOKE!” sounds cool, I’m gonna go watch it.
“JAMES GUNN MADE SUPERMAN WOKE!!” sign me TF up.
“Iron Heart is WOKE AND RIRI IS A DEI HIRE” bruh I’m a Marvel fan you had me at Iron.
How does everyone feel about Ghostbusters (2016)?
I love the cast collectively and individually, the movie is meh though. Absolutely the writers’ fault.
Mid
It peaked with the line “The power of Patty compels you!” But mostly mid

That movie sucks and sucks hard.
I thought it was just as good as the original: not great, but okay.
