That movie didn’t have anyone playing it straight consistently; Egon was always the straight man. He was the base that allowed Peter and Ray to joke and it not be overwhelming.
Ghostbusters 2016 had times when each character played it straight but, at the core, they all were stuttering joke machines with no one to really ground the jokes.
It’s a real shame too because the chance to do it was there. Kristen Wiig’s character would have been the obvious choice but Melissa McCarthy, who’s overacting I can’t stand, would have been great to see be the level-headed one. The decision to make every character quippy really buries the great deliveries of Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth.
I’ve ended up doing the same for most media lately. Be it movies, games or shows.
“Captain America Brave New World is WOKE!” sounds cool, I’m gonna go watch it.
“JAMES GUNN MADE SUPERMAN WOKE!!” sign me TF up.
