Bear. Gorillas can get killed by leopards. Yeah, they’re musculars and got decently sharp incisives and pointy canines, but bears hunt large animals as part of their diet, so they’re better equiped to kill. Teeth, bite force, claws, thick fur to dampen attacks…

Gorilla and some species of brown bear have significant overlap in weight.

      (From wikipedia)

Brown bears generally weigh 80 to 600 kg (180 to 1,320 lb), with males outweighing females.[33]

Gorillas are the largest living primates, reaching heights between 1.25 and 1.8 m (4 ft 1 in and 5 ft 11 in), weights between 100 and 270 kg (220 and 600 lb),

Equal weight doesn’t necessarily mean equal muscle. I would think a gorilla would still be more muscled than a bear, since the bear could just be fat from getting ready to hibernate.

Also gorillas are smart enough to use tools. It could just crack the bear over the head with a log or something.

Bears are predators evolved to hunt large game, primarily with brute force (unlike something like a big cat, which relies much more on ambushes).

Gorrilas, as tough as they are, survive through intelligence. This means avoiding tough fights, and when absolutely needed, fighting as a troop rather than individualy.

    So bear. But…

Does the Gorilla get time to prepare?

The one advantage gorillas have is their intelligence. If both animals are given training, or tools, then I could see the gorilla potentially winning - mostly because a bear will struggle to get any use out of either, whereas a gorilla could be trained to fight much more effectively and possibly even make/use weapons.

Bear, but I think it’s because gorillas are known to be peaceful and will probably run away from conflict

If it is a fight to the death… Idk I think with how physics works it might be quite even?

I like to think I’m smarter than at least most gorillas, and I would lose a fight to a bear in the woods. The bear is a car with claws and thick hide trying to kill you. It’s faster and stronger than you. It also flights and kills to survive and eat often, gorillas do not.

+1 to gorillas and no one else considering the intellect part.

Like, guys. Humans are weak. We rule the world.

I think bear can win on brute force, but, as soon as the gorilla sees the attack for what it is and considers a way to counter, the bear is toast.

I don’t think intellect would get you very far.

Eg. I’m a lot smarter than most bears, but I’m pretty sure that I’d still lose in a fight.

And I think most people are discrediting how smart bears are and over stating how smart gorillas are. They are not going to the fight with a spear or anything. And considering bears can be hard to take down quickly even with a gun. Yah gorilla doesn’t stand a chance.

I strongly believe a Bear would easily win. It has stronger Attack and Defence.

It has massive claws and will shred open a gorilla’s unprotected skin with it’s claws and teeth.

A gorilla has very little in terms of defence and that will be its downfall, it also only really has its teeth to attack with, and a Bear has thick skin to protect against that.

I don’t see how a Gorilla could deal a fatal blow to a bear before the bear would rip deep wounds into a Gorilla with it’s claws and teeth causing it to bleed out.

I could see a gorilla choking a bear out though, the bear isn’t going to be able to strangle the gorilla from behind.

Do… gorillas choke out anything in the wild? I feel like training either animal in Krav Maga or Ninjutsu puts your thumb on the scale.

I don’t know, but they’re physically capable of it. I once had an anthropology professor who demonstrated the difference between simian-like arms and quadruped-like arms, and the major part of it was noting that you’ve never seen a cat spread their arms out like the Vetrivian Man (they can’t). In the evaluation of ape vs. bear combat I don’t want to discount the capability of the ape to grasp, latch on or choke.

I don’t think primates choke at all in the wild, and I don’t think it’ll be the most effective method either.

When your opponent has claws and long teeth waiting for them to pass out while they dig their claws into you might not be the best strategy

We are primates, and when we put all the martial arts together (MMA) it turns into a match of who can get on top of and neutralize their opponent. A bear doesn’t have any way of attacking a primate if the primate can get to its back. As a human, we wouldn’t have the dexterity or strength to get around, cling onto a bear and choke it out, but a bear-sized gorilla probably could and once it does that it’s neutralized every mode of attack the bear has except writhing around and pushing it into other objects.

If MMA fighters had big jaws with teeth, and long sharp claws I don’t think wrestling would remain the best tactic.

Your opponent isn’t just going to turn their back on you, and if you try and grab them they can bite and hold on to you, and start clawing open deep wounds.

Can you even choke out a bear? I mean I know technically it’s possible but I would imagine their neck is a little more protected then ours.

In absolutely no scenario does the gorilla not just obliterate the koala bear. I don’t understand how you think they might even be a little matched in strength?
